On Friday 15th May, 2009, Class 3D had their last class assembly. They included many things that they have learnt so far. Some children read their Kennings poems while others acted out a play of The Three Little Pigs. They also learnt a great deal about Vikings which they enjoyed very much, so a amall group of children acted out how the Vikings attacked and raided a monastery. They all enjoyed being part of the assembly and loved performing!
In Literacy this half term, 5C have been studying Classic Narrative Poetry. We have based our work on a poem by Alfred Noyes called the Highway Man. We have created scenes, written metaphors and similes, carried out character interviews, created freeze frames using the Apple Mac computers and written our own verses for the poem. We now understand that a narrative poem tells a story and know how to use metaphors and similes in our writing.

The highway man galloped on his breath taking black horse. Clip clop clip clop the horse dragged his feet along the thick and long grass.
The highway man could not see a thing, he could only hear the crooked trees swishing and swaying. Despite having to go down the misty, foggy path, the highway man did not stop at all.
The moon shone and sparkled all through the night, the fog grew thicker and thicker, the mist gleamed on the dull trees and the stars twinkled every second.

The moon was shining brightly in the black midnight sky. The highwayman was galloping boldly across the purple moor. He could hear King George’s soldiers, as he was riding, riding on his noble steed. You could see the sleek clothes bouncing up and down. The eerie clouds caught the ghostly moon’s brightness in the black sky. The tree branches were like knurled fingers, as he rode off.

As the blinding moon floated across the misty clouds, bold boots strode silently over the smooth shiny road. The twisted bare trees swayed neatly as the cold wind blew them. The mixed sound of boots and hooves both fearless blended with the whistling sound of grass from the fresh moor. With one last breath of the wide, cold night sky he vanished; not a sound to hear nor a smell or touch his presence was no longer available in the eerie, foggy wild landscape.

The moon shone like a diamond on the road, where the highway man galloped on. The crooked trees stood awkwardly on the deadly grass. The ghostly mist covered the hills in the distance. After a while the purple moor stood mysteriously on the floor. As time went by the path started to shine brightly.

Podcasting
Year 4 have been learning how to write stories with a dilemma – a difficult choice. Before we began our writing we listened to a story called ‘Journey to Jo’burg’. The story is set in South Africa during the time of apartheid. The characters had to make many difficult decisions. We hot-seated as characters and asked questions about some of the dilemmas they were faced with. These were recorded as podcasts.

During their Literacy lessons, Class 4G have been looking at stories set in imaginary worlds. They discussed the settings, atmosphere and characters within the stories. Before attempting to write their own tales, Mrs Greeff gave the class some clay to make their imaginary characters and visualise them. The class had great fun and produced some wonderful sculptures as you can see from the pictures below.
